ABOUT THE SHOW

“You Can’t Stop The Beat!”
Winner of 8 Tony Awards!

It’s the inspiring story of teenager Tracy Turnblad set in Baltimore circa 1962.
She’s a big girl with a big heart and big hair who becomes a teen dance show celebrity.
Amid the rhythm of 60’s dance music and “downtown” rhythm and blues,
Tracy successfully launches a campaign to racially integrate the show.

HAIRSPRAY celebrates the uniqueness of an inclusive and diverse country where one person really can make a difference.

YOUTH RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

All youth in grades 6-12 auditioning must reside in or attend school in
Sheboygan county or the Kiel School District.

FRIENDS & FAMILY PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENT

HAIRSPRAY is a landmark production that requires a remarkable cast of 40 and a dedicated production crew of over 50 volunteers to create a memorable set, props, costumes, lighting, and sound. To meet the production needs,  Theater For Young Audiences and University Theatre are instituting a “FRIENDS & FAMILY” Participation Requirement for all cast members.

A show of this scale requires an average of 200 hours per week by production crew volunteers.
EXAMPLE:  Mon-Fri  6pm-9pm.  COSTUMES=5 volunteers x 5 nights x 3 hrs= 75 hrs.
SET = 8 volunteers x 5 nights x 3 hrs=120 hrs.   8 weeks of rehearsals, shows, & strike = 1600 hours!

Therefore, each actor is required to enlist FRIENDS & FAMILY to provide at least 3 hours and up to 6 hours per week on the production from start to strike.  FRIENDS & FAMILY  constitutes  parents, siblings, relatives, friends, neighbors & the actor him/herself.

This is a positive effort to get the job done, build pride, foster friendships, share skills, and cultivate fun while working on this award-winning musical.

We welcome a cast and a FRIENDS & FAMILY production crew who have a strong work ethic and derive joy and satisfaction from meeting a challenge.

NOTE: In the event that the FRIENDS & FAMILY requirement is a hardship for an actor, efforts will be made to accommodate him or her.
